Post Data Entry...
Hi Jimmy,

Nice App! A few questions, because it’s hard to tell in the demo version.

A: Can the software define different points deductions based on positions. Your standard is -10 per position, but what happens if the series decides to do increments of -10 for the A and -8 for the B and so on.

B: Tie Breakers. What determines a tie?

C: Automation. Since your target customer will be series that run on different scoring software, automatic entry would be nice. The time consuming part once you have your spreadsheet setup is the data entry. I have attached the raw data from RCSP from our GCS race last year. I know nothing of programming so this might be impossible, but see if you can figure out how the results are produced and use that information to enter the results into your system.

D: A few people criticize me about not showing the results from each race on our site always comparing it to yours, but they do tell me they like the "points behind" column. Could there be an option to add that column to the standings page?

Thank you,
Michael Holt

Post Re: Data Entry...
Hi Michael. Thanks for the feedback. I've tried to put the most ease of use I could into this application. Here's a hint that I haven't really pointed out: Go to the DEMO, Race Entry TAB and start typing in your last name at the "Driver" field. After typing in enough letters to get a match, you can press the tab key to accept the complete name. And if the "Main" and "Position" fields are correct, you can then press the enter key to save the driver's result. Now if it's a new driver, then you gotta enter the whole name for the first time of course. The Position will also auto-increment for the next driver to be entered. It will not automatically go from A to B main though.

Well, to answer your questions:
A) You would want to use the "Grid" feature if the point range varies between mains. There is a "Recalculate Grid" button that will stub out the points for positions 1 thru 100. You could then go to say position 11 and onward to start filling in new values.

B) Ties end of being broken based on the last race. Kinda defeats points huh? I am hoping that the "Custom Points" feature will remove any tie breakers. Some examples of "Custom Points" are TQ, Fastest Lap, and things like that. I hope other managers will get creative with the Custom Points.

C) I haven't built an import yet but it is possible. Your zip is the first time I've seen RCSP's import layout but I can do it. Oh, there could be a higher error rate due to different spellings for the same person between tracks. For that matter, it can happen when manually typing in a driver's name but the software does allow you to merge a driver's name. I had to do that this weekend.

D) Funny you should mention "Points Behind". I just noticed that awhile ago on the Nascar website. I was on that site looking for inspiration on colors because what I have now is a little dull. :) I'll definitely add a "Points Behind" column though.

Hope this helps Michael. I plan to do some advertising a little bit later but wanted to work on the color schemes first.

After I thought about it your right about the auto entry duplications. But on the other hand, if you had to manually change two or three entries thats still better than everyone. Also the app would need to read Last Name, First Name and give it the same value as First Name Last Name... According to the programmer, RCSP suggest you enter each driver in Last Name, First Name. I believe I have some old Autoscore results somewhere, I will find them and send you a copy.

If you haven't started on the color scheme programming you might want to consider Cascading Style Sheets so each track can use a few default ones, or have the option to make their own. Once you have the default.css it wouldn't be that hard duplicate and customize to look like their own website.

The name is entered as "Last, First" under the Race Entry TAB. I do prompt for the First name first under the Drivers TAB but names don't have to be created there. Instead, they can be created under the Race Entry TAB.

I am using CSS but have the filename hard-coded right now. I can change it to let the manager create their own CSS but it would have to reside on their server. I'll just have to add a CSS file location field to the Settings TAB.
